Well, this is something else. You can immediately tell that M and Darkside have created this, and the lyrical themes are obviously similar to Mgla’s, but this is an altogether different musical beast, with much less emphasis on melody and significantly more on rhythm. Though not really that musically similar, Kriegsmaschine is like Cobalt when Cobalt is at its most minimalist, and no two black metal bands bring “tribal, hypnotic drumming” to mind as much as these two do. This was a great immediate listen, but it has only impressed me more with repeated listening and I dare say that this album (and its follow up, Apocalypticists) is possibly more than the equal of With Hearts Towards None or Exercises in Futility. Call me a heretic now but see what happens when you listen to Kriegsmaschine!
